This is far more than a "toy".

First, I RARELY write reviews on products.
I have been studying electronics, mostly on my own, for many years. Some very important concepts like transistor bias and amplifier operation are difficult to grasp by just reading about them. This very well thought out kit starts at the beginning and does a very good job explaining not just how to build a circuit, but how and why it works. The book alone is worth the price of this kit! I think that even practicing electronic techs would learn a lot by doing the projects in this kit. I would have given it 6 stars if that were an option.

It is a sad fact that over 40 of the top electronics hobby kit makers have gone under. This company (Kosmos), Elenco, and Radio Shack's private branded kits are about all that are left with any quality.
This workshop is FAR from a toy, despite Amazon's listing! A "kit" that goes into prototype PCB's, oscillating applications of 555's and advanced op amp projects is for serious hobbyists or even inventors and engineers testing patent ideas. The instructional materials alone are worth the purchase.
The main competitor for this kit is the Elenco 500 (Elenco 500-In-1 Electronic Project Lab Kit Built-In Breadboard LCD Indicator Transistors at over $300. That kit is excellent, but the projects have very little learning value unless you augment them with other books, unlike this fine kit which explains not only the how, but also the why in much more detail than either the 500 or Radio Shack's offerings (RadioShack 28-280 Electronics Learning Lab) for example, which many RS stores are no longer even carrying.
If you want a more basic starter kit that IS more of an educational toy, the Elenco 130 (Elenco 130-in-1 Electronic Playground and Learning Center) is between the too basic Radio Shack kits, and this advanced offering from Kosmos.
In the old days of analog (radios and op amps that did math), "wiring" was key. Today, this fine kit as well as the 500 have MANY digital projects and experiments, making them up to date with even circuit design software like PSpice. The price of this on Amazon, relative to everything you get, is simply amazing (shhhh don't tell anyone that the components alone are worth more than this due to their silver content!).
If this is for you, an adult, get it! If it is for a "child" (as in pre teen), you'll need to work with them on any of the projects beyond the first 20 or so. This kit goes perfectly with the Raspberry Pi, Arduino and even the Parallax Propeller, because you can not only make and test circuits to bus over to them, but actually experiment with prototype voltages before risking a circuit on your Pi!
Highly recommended as a "break" from online activities, as well as serious experimenters, and the solderless format makes trials and testing fast and easy. Enjoy!! Once you "graduate," you can get your new Raspberry Pi here on Amazon and peripherals on mouser dot com.

Awesome but

I got this for Christmas for my son the only mager complaint I have is the knob we got was not right but otherwise it is tons of fun!
